A new Cadillac digital key feature is being rolled out to some owners, allowing them to test this feature before it becomes a standard item.
Did something get missed while GM was developing its technology? Many other automakers have already developed and offered a digital key feature for some vehicles, including such mainstream models as the Hyundai Sonata. Cadillac is finally rolling out the feature that can turn your smartphone into a digital key for your vehicle, and the brand is rolling this feature out to select owners to test it and provide feedback that Cadillac can use to improve the technology.
Digital car key technology and the Cadillac beta testing program
Cadillac is rolling out a beta program for digital key technology on the Lyriq and Optiq models. If you own one of these EVs, GM is asking for volunteers to test out the phone-based key system before it goes mainstream. The program gives early adopters a chance to try the tech and share feedback before the wider release. Here’s what you need to know about signing up and what to expect from the testing process.
The Cadillac digital key program is for 2026 models
Whether it’s the Lyriq beta testing or the Optiq digital key system, you need to have taken delivery of a 2026 model of either of these Cadillac vehicles to be considered for the GM phone key testing program. Drivers who are selected for the program will have early access to this system before it becomes one of the standard Cadillac EV features for future models. This feature seems like it is long overdue, but certainly the thought can be that it’s better late than never for GM to offer this convenience to Cadillac owners.
A great use of over-the-air technology
The new Cadillac digital key feature will be sent to owners via an OTA software update, which enables owners to connect their iPhone or Apple Watch to the primary vehicle key feature. The phone as a key program allows owners to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles without the physical key fob. In addition to the active smart features, the system allows for passive technology, detecting when the phone is within a two-meter radius of the door, giving the phone holder the ability to unlock the door. This means you can keep your phone in your pocket and use it as a key, similar to a key fob.
Advanced Cadillac digital key controls
The new phone, as a key feature, allows basic functions, but GM is going further than that. The functionality offered gives the owner access to remote starting of the engine, setting the cabin for preconditioning, and liftgate control. Another great feature of this new item is the ability to share keys by simply granting access to other people who will use their phones as keys. A backup physical key card will begin shipping with the Lyriq, enabling owners to have a backup system in case the smartphone is lost or the battery is dead.
How can owners gain access to the beta program
For owners to be included in the Cadillac digital key testing program, their VIN must be selected, they must have received physical key cards with their vehicles, and they must have compatible phone models. GM is using its support of Apple Wallet to make this possible, which means Android users are not able to be part of the early testing programs. GM has begun creating its own version of in-vehicle infotainment, but has been working with Apple to ensure support for features such as Apple Music and iPhone connectivity.
What do these Cadillac models offer?
